Gunfire Erupts at Howe Park Results in 4 Shot in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood
Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are looking into a shooting incident that occurred late Saturday at Howe Community Park as officers were dispersing a large unsanctioned party of several hundred people.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office first arrived at Howe Community Park shortly before 6:30 in the evening after being notified of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, a second caller reported regarding a possible fight breaking out at Howe Park.
A sheriff's airship searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Even so, it became clear that several hundred individuals had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.
When the Shots Rang Out
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by forming a perimeter and making announcements ordering attendees to vacate the area. Approximately 15 minutes were allotted for the crowd to leave.
It was during this dispersal that upwards of 20 gunshots were discharged. The sudden gunfire caused mass panic. Deputies quickly moved to looking for those injured.
Four People Shot
Ultimately, four gunshot victims were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — including a female and three males all reportedly in their mid to late twenties — were brought to area medical facilities. Medical teams stated that two were treated for serious injuries, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one suffered minor injuries. According to authorities, all four were expected to survive.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and aided in treating those with gunshot wounds prior to hospital transport.
Crime Scene Evidence
The center of the incident was confirmed to have unfolded on Cottage Way close to the local Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Law enforcement investigators discovered additional spent rounds along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were noted in the wrought iron perimeter fencing alongside the Home Depot. The physical evidence pointed to that a shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. Arrests Made
Information obtained over police scanner frequencies established that a Kia was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four suspects were stopped and detained. Sacramento law enforcement were traveling to Solano County to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Surveillance footage revealed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
